The signing of Zlatan Ibrahimovic ticked several boxes for Manchester United. It added another bona fide global superstar to their ranks, given the Swede’s immense popularity, and added a certainty of something vital that United have certainly lacked over the last few years; goals.
The Red Devils have struggled in front of goal since Sir Alex Ferguson’s last season in charge especially under Louis van Gaal, and managed a measly 49 in 38 Premier League games last season with the boring and drab style of football.
Ibrahimovic has, to his credit, done his part to improve things, and has notched six goals so far in the Premier League alone, but Jose Mourinho knows that the 35-year old is a stopgap option at best, and will likely not last at United much longer than two seasons. So, of course, the question then becomes how to the club plan for the future?
If Sky Sports’ sources are to be believed, then Harry Kane’s reluctance to sign a new deal might play right into United’s hands. The Tottenham Hotspur striker currently earns £60, 000 a week, but talks have stalled in the short term, and even though both the player and club are ‘relaxed’ about the situation, this might be the perfect opportunity for United to test the waters and attempt to bring Kane to Old Trafford. Kane scored 30 goals and created 3 assists in all competition last season. Kane has been influential to Tottenham Hotspur's performance this season but since his injury Tottenham have continually struggled in front of goal making him a perfect fit for United.
Former Arsenal midfielder Ray Parlour has suggested that any interest would make a lot of sense: “I’m sure Manchester United will be looking at him [Kane],” Parlour told talkSport in quotes run by Sky Sports. “They will be thinking ‘OK, Ibrahimovic is here at the moment but he’s getting on a bit – we might need a new striker soon’. He could be perfect for Manchester United.”

Parlour isn’t wrong. Kane has managed 59 goals over the last two seasons, and his physicality, finishing, strength and age would all be great assets to United. Given United’s need to think beyond Ibrahimovic and Wayne Rooney as their current main striking options, the club should certainly be taking an extended look at the possibility of bringing Kane to Old Trafford. Of course, Spurs have proven to be particularly difficult to deal with over the years, and chairman Daniel Levy wouldn’t consider letting his team’s star asset leave without a gigantic fight, but if Kane is unable to agree terms on a new deal, then United should seriously consider doing everything in their power to make sure that they are his next club. Mourinho might have just found his next "Didier Drogba".
